This is a project created by the École des Bâtisseurs in May 2016. The goal of this project was to increase the students’ Francophone identity by encouraging them to ask for French services in a French-minority setting like the city of Fredericton.
Students started by submitting Fredericton retailers. From about fifty retailers, a dozen businesses were chosen. A discussion was held in class with students and teachers in order to instruct students on how to ask for French services when they went into the community.
There were lots of great discussions, and the students felt they had everything they needed to be able to ask for French services. After the groundwork was done in class, students had the entire month of May to have their name written on a board in the hallway when they successfully received French services.
At the end of the year, during a school assembly, we announced the three businesses that had given the best French services to the students. A school certificate was given to the three businesses to thank them for caring about the Francophone community of Fredericton. The identified businesses were not informed of the project beforehand.
