A community project for the French education system
The Linguistic and Cultural Development Policy of New Brunswick provides tools to help the province’s Acadian and French speaking community develop its current and future generations. The Policy also aims to promote the vitality and survival of the French language and Acadian culture.
The Policy was created by more than 200 leaders of the Acadian and Francophone community in New Brunswick, as well as the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development (DEECD). Together, they have engaged in a societal project that will help address the challenges linked to their minority status, namely their struggle to ensure the transmission of the French language and Acadian culture to future generations.
The Policy aims to help schools and educational settings carry out the Acadian and Francophone education system’s dual mission: to ensure the educational success of their students and to help in the building of each learner’s identity. The Policy seeks to contribute to the sustainable development of our community as well as to that of our province.
The Policy describes the priorities and objectives of the Acadian and Francophone education system throughout the next 10 years. It outlines 48 strategies that can be put into action by organizations, young people, parents, citizens, schools and educational settings. These strategies are divided into five focus areas:
The outcome of several years of reflection
The Linguistic and Cultural Development Policy arose from a process of reflection that began a few years ago within the Government of New Brunswick and the Acadian and Francophone community. In 2008, the Commission on Francophone Schools undertook a major consultation with the entire Acadian and Francophone community and various members of the education system in order to identify issues and find solutions to the challenges faced by Francophone schools. In 2009, following similar objectives, a Global Strategy, was developed under the framework of the États généraux on arts and culture in Acadian society in New Brunswick.
The Action Group for the Commission on Francophone Schools (GACEF), an entity comprised of multisectorial partners, was created and charged with implementing the Commission’s recommendations and developing the policy. They elaborated the Policy’s 48 strategies and 5 focus areas. The Policy is being implemented the same way it was developed: through collaboration with partners in the education sector and the community. To this day, more than 25 organizations have developed their own action plans and integrated them into their operations.
Now, with the help of the Policy, let’s Take the Next Step!
