CAFi’s Assistance Program for Homework and Francization wants to help immigrant students succeed in school by giving them the support they need for their homework and their francization development.
Volunteer tutors give children and teenagers the support they need to succeed and learn French by reading and playing games with them.
A tutoring session lasts an hour and a half. During the session, children will participate in group discussions (oral communication), receive support to complete their homework and improve their reading skills (dyadic working session between the child and the volunteer tutor), play games and fun group activities in French (comprehension and oral communication). The sessions take place at the CAFi offices and four (4) sessions are offered each week.
Families and tutors will choose what day suits them best between the following days :
Tuesday, from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.;
Wednesday, from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.;
Friday, from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.;
Saturday, from 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Goals:
For children and teenagers: to receive the support they need to complete their homework and learn French by reading and playing games in French.
For parents: to comprehend the academic subjects, the school’s communications and the school’s function, as well as receiving relevant resources.
For volunteer tutors: to build a network between themselves and between parents.
Advantages:
- Completing the work started at school;
- Exposing children to French culture as much as possible;
- Fostering social relationships (with other children and tutors);
- Allowing children to grow through fun activities that favour their language and social learning.
