“Notre jeunesse acadienne : Notre devoir d’avenir” was an initiative intended for teenagers, schools, and community members with three phases.
Phase 1 - Education: Demonstrate the importance of secondary and post-secondary education in continuous learning.
Phase 2 – Entrepreneurial skills and community involvement: Develop our teenagers’ entrepreneurial skills and community involvement.
Phase 3 – Youth retention: Encourage youths to stay or come back in the Acadian Peninsula in order to contribute to the economic, linguistic, cultural, artistic, environmental, and social development of the community.
The goal of the project was to encourage youths to discover their potential and talents by enticing them to succeed while encouraging secondary and post-secondary education. We also wanted to improve teenagers’ entrepreneurial skills and encourage community involvement – they’re our future, they’re the ones who will be in charge of our economy. With this project, teenagers and facilitators were able to take a closer look at what motivates youths to leave the region and possible solutions around what could make them stay or come back.
After analyzing the evaluation questionnaires and attending goal-setting meetings with participating teenagers, we believe we successfully increased their awareness about the importance of finishing their education, taking action in community projects, and developing their entrepreneurial skills. Their active and meaningful participation during these early evening meetings also contributed to their identity building.
