Students and staff members from Saint-Henri school worked on a photography project in collaboration with artist-in-residence Frédéric Gayer. Students and staff members participated in photography workshops held by the artist. Afterwards, they took pictures to represent what the Francophonie looks like to them or what it means to be Francophone or Acadian.
Students had to dig deep to find their Francophone pride – with the help of family members and friends, they had to use an artistic angle and skills learned with the artist on how to capture the Francophonie in one picture. At the end of the project, the pictures taken by the students created a giant Acadian flag, which hangs proudly on the walls of our school.
After collecting the pictures, students had to develop their critical thinking skills in order to sort the pictures and choose the best ones from their class. Students also had the opportunity to apply for an editing position in charge of assembling the pictures to create the Acadian flag with the help of the artist. During the Provincial French Pride Week, we invited family members, students, special guests, partners, and community members to joins us in celebrating the students’ achievements. Everyone was impressed by the final product; an art work that would forever represent our students’ pride and shine in our school.
The goal of this ambitious project was to develop our students’ sense of pride and belonging to their school, culture, and language. Throughout the project, we were able to witness students dedicated to their learning process, their community, and their desire to learn more. Furthermore, we were able to see proud Francophone students.
